Nike continues to make moves in the MMA world by signing another Japanese superstar to their stable of athletes. Joining UFC veteran Caol Uno on the Nike roster is UFC newcomer Yoshihiro Akiyama, who will make his debut against Alan Belcher on July 11th at UFC 100. The news of Akiyama’s endorsement deal with Nike caused quite the stir in Japan, due to Akiyama’s shenanigans during his K-1: Premium Dynamite bout in 2006, when he was blamed for applying an oil-based skin cream prior to his match.
Akiyama has since appeared in a Nike television spot and is set to debut his custom Nike sneaker line at UFC 100. The line includes the ultra-popular Air Force One and Cortez styles. Whether these sneakers are set to be one-off customs solely created for Akiyama, or if they’ll eventually hit stores is still to be determined. Either way, the athletic sportswear giant is beginning to show face in the MMA world.
