Fighter Faves: Jim Miller

One of the best lightweight fighters in the game and a leading face for the TapouT #MYFIGHTMATTERS campaign, there’s no question Jim Miller is one of the toughest guys around. Whenever you hear “Bad Moon Rising” hit the speakers, you know Miller’s about to step inside the Octagon to battle it out. But along with his appreciation for CCR walkout music, ever wondered what else Miller likes best besides competing inside the cage? From fight wear brands, to training gear, to movies, cars and more, check out these ten quick questions with the New Jersey native to find out what gets Jim Miller going both inside the gym and out.

Favorite fight wear brands?

Tapout and Venum. This isn’t fight wear but my “go to” hat is the camo bass pro shops cap.

What fight gear do you use to train?

Venum shorts and gloves / Tapout compression shorts and shirt.

Favorite music to workout to?

I don’t need to have music on when I workout, but when I do it’s a mix of all the types that I normally listen to. Country, rock, 80′s stuff…anything with a good beat.

Dream car?

I really don’t have a dream car. I like American muscle cars more than anything – 60′s or 70′s Camaro, El Camino or Chevelle. I really want a military truck though. A Deuce and a half, that would be awesome.

Any idols or heroes?

My parents and siblings are the people that I look up to most. They have all helped make me into the man I am today and are all amazing people.

The best MMA fight you’ve ever seen?

There are so many good ones. Recently, I’d have to go with Henderson vs. Shogun. World class technique for 25 minutes.

Favorite walkout song?

“Bad Moon Rising” by CCR. I think I probably get more fired up when I hear Dan’s song though, “Run Though The Jungle”.

Favorite movies or TV shows?

Red Dawn and The Walking Dead.

What fuels you besides fighting?

Learning new skills.

UFC on FOX 3 Entrance Music

Following the lightweight battle that went down between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller from East Rutherford, New Jersey, here’s a recap of some of the UFC on FOX 3 entrance songs that were heard during fighter walkouts. Hometown hero Jim Miller stuck to his usual “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, while Diaz came out once again to 2Pac. Other music choices included Josh Koscheck’s “Higher Ground” walkout song by Red Hot Chili Peppers, along with entrance tunes from Eminem and more. Below are just a few of the walkout songs heard in New Jersey, with more music being added to the list in the days ahead.

Fighter Faves: “Filthy” Tom Lawlor

If there’s one thing that’s certain, Tom Lawlor sure knows how to make an entrance. Whether walking out to the cage or stepping onto the scale to weigh-in, “Filthy” Tom is one of the best in the fight biz at getting noticed. Before watching Lawlor step back inside the Octagon at UFC on FUEL TV 3 where he faces Jason MacDonald, we caught up with the always entertaining UFC middleweight competitor for a few quick questions on some of his favorite things. Ever wondered what makes “Filthy” Tom tick? Here’s your chance to find out.

Favorite fight wear brands?

Scramble, Dethrone, Clinch Gear. I am actually currently wearing a Scramble sweatshirt right at this moment. A purple Scramble Newaza sweatshirt.

What fight gear do you use to train?

For the most part I have a bunch of Clinch Gear stuff that they hooked me up with out in California last year. Their stuff is amazing quality as far as shorts and shirts go. However when I moved to the sunny tropical paradise of Rhode Island last year, I discovered that wearing shorts in 20 degree weather isn’t fun unless you want your testicles to freeze to your leg, so now I wear spats at every chance. Scramble makes great ones, Under Armour, heck I even have some Old Navy leggings I train in.

Favorite music to workout to?

It is different almost everyday. I am a big fan of the mixes that Mick Boogie puts out. He is an awesome DJ from Brooklyn and has quite an eclectic mix of music thrown in to his tapes. Mostly I am a hip-hop guy though.

Dream car?

Jeep Wrangler! Well actually I like the Suzuki Samurai better, but I ended up buying a Jeep Wrangler after my last fight (yeah….during the winter, without a working top) and it is a blast to drive. I also own a Yamaha Morphous maxi-scooter but don’t get to drive it nearly enough since I have it in storage in Florida. I may bite the bullet and buy an old school Hondamatic motorcycle but I go back and forth all the time with that decision.

Any idols or heroes?

Of course. Godzilla is awesome, he destroyed entire cities and stuff. I also like champion eater Crazy Legs Conti, professional wrestler Chris Hero, and that guy Tom from Myspace. Oh and Tom that invented Tom’s Shoes…actually I just like everyone named Tom. Tommy Bahama, Tom Po, Thomas the Train, all of them.

The best MMA fight you’ve ever seen?

Eddie Alvarez vs Joachim Hansen like 5 years ago in DREAM was awesome. Really there are so many fights that are great, that I hate to answer this question. I could never do the sport justice by picking just one fight.

Favorite walkout song?

I tried to enter to Adam Sandler’s “Medium Pace” but was denied….still it would be my favorite.

Favorite movies or TV shows?

Anything not named “Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star”. That is the worst movie I have ever seen.

What fuels you besides fighting?

Protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

1-on-1: A Conversation with Round 5′s Damon Lau

Going along with this month’s Ultimate Collector Series 9 release, we caught up with Round 5 President Damon Lau for a quick chat to get the inside scoop on this latest collection, hints at what’s in store for Series 10, and much more. Check it out below.

I have to start this one off with a Thank You – I’ve been enjoying Don Frye sitting next to my computer for the last week. His mustache is impeccable. What made you decide to create a Don Frye figure?

Damon Lau: We have such a loyal and broad base of UFC fans that collect our products ranging from those who watched UFC/PRIDE since the very beginning to the casual fan who only started watching MMA in the past few years. The reason we made Don Frye is to create an item that pays homage to ‘vintage’ years of MMA giving some of our diehard fans something special to collect. Also, nothing is more epic than the Don Frye mustache.

Are there plans to create any other “vintage” MMA characters?

DL: Absolutely. We recently announced Mark Coleman as a character in our Series 10 lineup coming out in August.

When can we expect to see a Cro Cop? Your fans are clamoring.

DL: We’ve always wanted to do a Cro Cop but have been unable to reach his management, as he is not part of the UFC licensing agreement. If we were able to connect, this would happen in a heartbeat.

The Nick Diaz PRIDE figure was an interesting choice, considering he’s only had one fight in PRIDE. How come you decided to go with this?

DL: There are both UFC and PRIDE versions of Nick Diaz available now. The difference is that the PRIDE version is something that is available only to online retailers and specialty stores. We created this for the more diehard MMA fan who knows what PRIDE is and who wants a version of his collectible that is a little bit different than what you would find in a FYE store or a Walmart.

Can you tell us a little bit about your Regular Edition figures versus your Limited Edition figures? What are the differences?

DL: The Limited Edition items are produced in limited quantity usually ranging between 500 to 1500 units. We will never end up recreating these items again as they are individually numbered (i.e. 2 of 750) and usually are distinguished by some sort of feature element that is different from a regular unit. The feature elements are broad and can range from recreations of actual signature walkout T-shirts (accurate to the fighter’s actual sponsors for a specific fight), to changes to the actual design of the figure itself. We’ve even gone as far as getting Don Frye to individually sign each of his Limited Edition figures. Often Limited Editions have been resold back into the market a year after launch for 20x the original value, so they are often sold out immediately after launch.

Do the Regular Edition figures appeal to a more general MMA fan whereas the Limited Editions are more for hardcore fans and collectors?

DL: Exactly. The regular editions are for casual fans and at $14.99 nothing really beats it when it comes to MMA memorabilia or gifts. The limited editions are really for diehard fans. We don’t even show images on our website (www.round5mma.com). Images are only shown via our Facebook fan page so unless you are a hardcore fan, you won’t hear about these. If you are a hardcore collector, they might be all you hear about! Granted, we have over 70,000 crazed collectors on our fan page so it makes limited edition items even harder to get after they are initially launched into the market.

Are the points of sale different?

DL: Yes, the regular editions are available in standard retail outlets (i.e. Walmart Canada, Toys “R” US Canada, FYE) meanwhile the limited editions are only available online or through a few select specialty shops.

How about Ultimate Collector Series 10, can you give us some inside info?

DL: It’s probably one of our biggest series to date featuring Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Anthony Pettis, Mark Coleman, Alistair Overeem and Dominick Cruz. It will be available this August.

Finally, how much are these? And where can fans buy them?

DL: The MSRP for the regular editions are $14.99 and available in the United States at FYE or online. In Canada, they are available at Walmart, Toys “R” Us and online.

UFC 145 Entrance Music

Hunting down some of the walkout songs that were heard at UFC 145?
